In an era where the Kardashian ‘kontour,’ overwhelming beauty how-tos on Pinterest and more-than-multiple beauty vloggers take centre-stage, I’m making a humble plea for a make under. Here’s why:
What is a make under:
First of all, it’s important to understand what exactly constitutes a make under? Urban Dictionary describes a make under as “a more natural makeup look, working with one’s natural hair color and texture.” Today, we are so often bombarded with innumerable tips, DIYs and must-haves that, just like Kim Kardashian (or Nikki Minaj, or Snooki, or Lil’ Kim – really, a variety of female celebs out there), we all need a make under to embrace ourselves. A make under is not necessarily no makeup but a more muted version of the makeup your wear. The idea is to simply embrace your natural beauty while enhancing it with minimal makeup.
Why do you go through a make under:
With fashion taking a minimalist approach, especially normcore and the 70s resurfacing, it’s become important to complement the two trends. Besides, in this heat you’ll be extremely thankful for this approach.
So, how do you go about it:
For the daytime:
Two words: Brows and eyes. Groom your brows and play up your eyes. Just because it’s a minimalist’s approach to makeup doesn’t mean you ditch your entire makeup kit. Swap your heavy foundation for a light-weight one or a BB cream, and simply conceal the one-off zits or acne. Look for mineral makeup for a flawless yet evenly-concealed look. Fill in your brows, add a faint brown liner to highlight your eyes and a nude lip colour for a complete (but not over-done) look.
For an evening out:
A makeup downgrade can work for an evening out too. Work a bright matte-red lipstick with no liner, mascara or cheek tint. Without the multiple layers of makeup, your red lipstick will be more dramatic, but still effortless.
This trend is just so appropriate for those days to work when you wake up late and have literally 13 minutes to get ready. Simply invest in a quality concealer that blends well and covers up all flaws. A good concealer brush is a must, since your finger will push away the concealer rather than blend it in. Fill in your brows and dab on some light gloss – there, you’re just perfect for a busy day at work!
